Origins Game Fair 2019

June 28, 2019

From a professional standpoint the move to Michigan was a really BIG change for me. I find myself moving from Front-end Development into Full Stack software engineering. Its presented me with a massive learning curve. Bankrate is currently in the process of becoming mostly a Vue.js/Node shop, but we have plenty of other systems still attached to our stack that will be aroud for a while. I’ve already been diving deeper and deeper into Vue.js over the last month or so, and I plan to continue my educational journey there.

Thats part of the reason I rebuilt my website. I’ve learned over my career, that sharing your experiences with others is key to furthering both your personal development and the development of others. As I look to becoming a Tech leader within my career, I think about this more and more; How do I best convey my experience to those who are following in the path behind me? I’ve had the good fortune to work with and help a number of Junior developers start their careers. I like to think I was successful in helping them become the amazing professionals I see them as today.

I am hoping to post here more often, as I try to work out what the next step of my career brings. I’ve been generally horrible about updating my site in a timely manner, and who knows. Maybe it will be about year before I get back to this again. But I’m going to try, and be better.

Personally things have also been very interesting. I spent time this month at Origins Game Fair, and it was a delightful experience. My girlfriend and I saw the entire show floor and played in several RPG games (Starfinder and D&D), and tried as many games as we could muster the time for. The added benefit of being able to meet the creators of the games and talk to them directly was an invaluable experience. We really enjoyed True Dungeon and are looking forward to our next visit to the attraction. Did I mention all the games? THERE WERE SO MANY GAMES!!! We have discovered some new favorites, like Zombies! and Fire Tower, as well as fortified old collections.

Really the whole experience at Origins set us up for some expectations next year, as we’ve already began planning our Trip. Tabletop gaming is just going to forever be part of who I am and what I do. Also, who knew Settlers of Catan was so huge?!? But until next post… Play a game and be happy!
