On Life, Work, Monopolies, and the General State of the World

August 20, 2020

Life is full of weird decisions and challenges. My wife and I since the pandemic started, had been saying that we would like to end up moving closer to our families. This change would lead us across the state back home to Muskegon, having been away for five years, that is a big change for me.

Continuing the trend of change. I’ve moved on from Red Ventures, its bittersweet as I felt there was still things I could do there, but life called me in another direction. I will always be grateful for the friends I made, and the skills I gained in my time with that organization. If anyone is looking for the next stop on their career I’d highly suggest they see what Red Ventures has available. I’m looking forward to my next opportunity and in the meantime I’ve been staying sharp with a wide array of personal projects.

I built a site for my friend Mikey — catnipapawthecary.com. I’ve started a new web application project that is long overdue to have begun and I’m really excited about the potential. I spent a chunk of time shoring up my personal sites and infrastructure. As covered in my last post, this blog is now powered by the WordPress Rest API. It feels good to just be able to write a post without having to deal with new templates, adding the post to the index, etc… Its been fun to take the time and learn a whole bunch of new things. I can’t wait to share more of the things I’ve been working on here.

Its minor on the list of the worlds problems, but I’d like to take a moment to touch on the Anti-trust suits that have been brought against Americas largest tech companies recently. Specifically focusing on Apple and the allegations that its App Store offers unfair competition allowing Apple to hold a monopoly over Apps on iOS enabled devices. Duh… Its been clear for a long time that Apple is making App store rules and decisions based on only whats going to be best for Apple. Along with that they will often skirt their own rules for developers as they see fit. All of this leaves Apple in the sole position of deciding what can or cannot be installed on iOS enabled devices. This is not okay, its clearly anti-consumer and unfairly punishes Apples competition. As a consumer who just wants their tech to work without much fuss, I’m all about the Apple ecosystem. However, I see no reason for the strict nature in which they manage their walled garden and they could easily let more people inside. I’m looking forward to how this will all play out in court in the coming months/years.

My previous post didn’t really touch on it, but… Weird times huh?

Life it seems continues to take strange turns and offer unforeseen challenges on all fronts. Its been hard these last few months to sit back and watch the world unfold around me. The chaos, and disorder compounded by the lies and deceptions from our highest offices. Its hard to fathom how exactly America comes back from this time we’re living now. I am not sure if we’ve ever been closer to slipping helplessly toward becoming a authoritarian state.

The division and the hate has only grown worse as people become victims of their own belief systems. Its not hard to imagine a person who has gone so far into their own beliefs that to turn back would only to betray ones sense of self. So the cycle of vengeance and vitriol continues. Nobody can claim innocence, nobodies hands are clean of this mess. We’ve all done this to ourselves.

I found myself talking a friend the other day and I realized the only real action we can take right now as concerned and logically driven citizens is to vote. Each and every one of our votes can help put us closer to coming back from the sheer precipice of disaster we’re teeter upon. Vote my friends… Just vote.
